Newark PD: Carjacker Caught Hiding In Backyard After Crashing Pickup Stolen At Knifepoint

A Newark man who ordered a woman out of her car at knifepoint was arrested after police officers spotted him hiding in someone's backyard after he crashed the vehicle, authorities said.

A woman was sitting in a parked 2012 Dodge Durango at Mountainview Place when a man, later identified as Wallace L. Johnson ordered her out at knifepoint around 5:15 p.m. Saturday, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose.

Sixth Precinct officers saw a vehicle matching the description of the victim's in a crash near the intersection of Mountainview Place and Chelsea Avenue, Ambrose said. As they walked over, the driver got out and fled the scene, according to police.

The officers spotted Wallace, 30, hiding in a backyard on Cedar Avenue, where he was arrested without further incident, Ambrose said.
